Jamestown Cruise-In Looking For New Sponsor
The Downtown Jamestown Cruise-In is looking for a new organizer.
The CHQ Chamber said in a news release Monday that the chamber is focusing its programming on events that better meet the chamber’s mission like the Jumpstart to Third Thursday. Jumpstart to Third Thursday will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month, starting Thursday, with additional entertainment and special events at downtown Jamestown businesses.
“As the CHQ Chamber focuses our programming on events that better meet the chamber mission, we will not manage Jamestown Cruise-In going forward,” chamber officials wrote in a news release Monday. “We hope to transition the event to a new planner and have talked with several other organizations about potentially running Cruise-In. So far no one has been able to take it on. If any local organization is interested, we would be happy to meet and share information. Please call us at 716-484-1101.”
Cruise-In is the second recent event the chamber has tried to turn over to another community organization in recent months. Chamber officials announced the cancellation of the annual President’s Day Weekend Winter Festival in Mayville only to see the festival revived by community organizations. The festival went on under new leadership.
The chamber took over the Downtown Jamestown Cruise-In when the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation found itself unable to continue planning the annual August car show held in downtown Jamestown. In May 2017, JRC officials announced they would not be the main sponsor for the annual downtown car show. About a month later the Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce announced it would take the reins of the Jamestown Cruise-In and bring it back to its roots, with classic cars, live music and activities for all ages. Even though JRC was not the main host of the Cruise-In for the 2016 event, it did financially support the event along with several additional sponsors like the Der Kobblers Automobile Association, Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce, Landmark Chevrolet, Media One Group and Northwest Arena.
The chairman of the Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce at the time was Lee Harkness, who had run the cruise-in for more than two decades when he was director of the former Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation.
The Downtown Jamestown Cruise-In has been held for 32 of the past 33 years, with the only year missed being 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
