In an interesting turn of events, Nightmare Castle Phantasmagoria brings a unique haunted experience.
And there’s a twist – audience members don’t have to leave their seats.
The production opened Friday and continues today at the Spire Theater, 317 E. Third St. Showtimes are 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9:15 p.m.
“It’s like a haunted house, except instead of going and walking through and being scared, you sit down,” said Producer-Director Angelo Valentino. “The haunting comes to you.”
Valentino wrote the whole story, which is actually three stories, that takes place in an old abandoned church. The use of flashbacks help propel the story.
“It starts with modern day, and then it goes back to like this, modern day, abandoned church. Then it goes back to when the church was functioning, and it goes back to before the church was ever built. That last story that takes place in the 1800s and kind of explains why the church is haunted,” Valentino said.
Valentino noted that during the half-hour production, there is narration while the actors perform their parts on stage in front of the audience.
Meriam-Webster.com defines phantasmagoria as: one – an exhibition of optical effects and illusions; two – a contstantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imagined, or a scene that constantly changes; and three – a bizarre or fantastic combination, collection or assemblage.
Last year, Valentino said, there were random stories, but this year, he wanted to have some continuity, so he opted on a theme. Next year, he noted, the show may be about a dungeon of an actual castle.
Moving forward, he said, “It will be something different.”
The shows continue on Oct. 24, 25, and 27 at 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9 p.m.
