City Council Discusses Resolution For JCC Athletic Complex
Jamestown City Council members will have the opportunity Monday to support a new athletic complex partnership between Jamestown Community College and the Jamestown YMCA.
A support resolution was brought before the council during Monday’s work session to encourage the state to include funding for the building of the new athletic complex at Jamestown Community College. Council President Anthony Dolce, R-Ward 2, brought the resolution before the council, saying it was something he and Mayor Kim Ecklund had received a while back from JCC.
“As you know they are in the process of combining, working with and partnering with the Jamestown YMCA to build the athletic complex down at JCC,” Dolce said. “They’ve applied for several grants and because Jamestown is one of the sponsors for this, this is just a formal resolution. It doesn’t require any funding, basically the result is that the council hereby requests the inclusion of the JCC athletic complex in SUNY’s capital request for the upcoming 25-26 executive budget.”
Dolce said the resolution is meant to encourage the state to include funds in the budget next year for JCC to move forward with the project. He said he knew the YMCA and JCC have applied for federal grants as well.
“This is just a support resolution to go into the portfolio to strengthen their case and again requires no financial responsibility from the city from our budget,” Dolce said.
A question was raised by the council how the Diethrick Park Stadium would play into the athletic complex. Dolce said the stadium did not come into this at all and that there is a new proposal for that and that JCC had asked to come in but that he had put them off until after the budget cycle was finished.
“The athletic facility will be completely upgraded and on one side they’re going to add a whole other section that will be the YMCA,” Dolce said. “They also have included that they’re going to remove tennis courts and put in soccer fields, athletic fields, baseball fields over there. It has nothing to do with Russell Diethrick Park, that is not part of this at all at this point. That’s a separate project.”
The $43 million project has received approval from the county Planning Board. Of that amount JCC would be responsible for a little over $24 million. The YMCA would pay $19,189,293. Of JCC’s amount, 50% would come from the state, 25% would come from the county and the college would be responsible to raise the remaining 25% through its foundation. For the county portion, that amount would be around $6 million.
Some of the highlights of the project include:
