The Jamestown Police Department is going to add several new pieces of equipment thanks to Rand Precision Machining Company.

Council committee meetings begin with the Housing Committee at 6:30 p.m. in the police training room on the fourth floor of City Hall followed by the Finance, Public Safety and Public Works committees at 7 p.m. The full council will hold a work session at 7 p.m. in the police training room, during which city Board of Public Utilities representatives will make a presentation.

Three resolutions on the agenda for tonight’s City Council work session involve accepting a $5,200 gift from the city company located on Allen Street and then spending the proceeds. The gift is the latest of several Rand Precision Machining Company officials have made to the city police department.

One of the purchases is of five simunition conversion kits for the Jamestown Police Department SWAT team at a cost of $1,845.

“These conversion kits are critical for training scenarios,” Timothy Jackson, city police chief and public safety director, said in a staff memo accompanying the resolution. “They will allow the members to properly utilize their guns safely during training scenarios.”

Jackson is also asking the council’s permission to purchase 15 new equipment cases for SWAT team members to house officers’ helmets, vests and other gear. The cases will cost $3,351 and come from the rest of the gift from Rand Precision Machining.

The department is also asking the council for approval to purchase drone equipment from Steel City Drones in Carnegie, Pa. for $36,098.99. The equipment will be paid for with money the city received from a 2024 state Department of Criminal Justice Services LETECH grant totaling $285,400.

“The Jamestown Police Department currently has several officers capable of deploying drones, and this equipment has been valuable in solving crime,” Jackson wrote in a memo included in the council agenda.

Starting at $2.99/week.
