Hochul Visits Dunkirk To Tout Wells Expansion

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul couldn’t resist the pun. Visiting Dunkirk Tuesday to tout Wells Enterprises’ $425 million expansion project, she said journalists were there to get “the big scoop of the day.”

They did leave with literal scoops: Golden ice cream scoops were handed out at the exit to commemorate the ice cream plant expansion, expected to add about 270 jobs.

Several officials got introduced before Hochul as the event opened, Wells’ Dunkirk plant manager David Fiore garnering the loudest applause. The Dunkirk Armory was packed with much of Wells’ local workforce.

Liam Killeen, CEO of Wells, noted it has been five years since the company entered Dunkirk. Its plant in the city has since become “a critical part of our over 4,000-strong team nationwide,” he said.

Killeen thanked Ferrero Group, the Italian outfit that acquired Wells last year, for backing the expansion. “Their support … has never wavered,” he said. “What was originally envisioned as a $250 million project…is now planned as a more than $400 million investment right here in Dunkirk.”

The project will add state-of-the-art ice cream making lines and new chocolate manufacturing room, Killeen said. New breakrooms and offices are also planned. “I’ve never been more excited about our future in Dunkirk. Our journey is just beginning,” he said.

Hochul started her speech by talking up her Western New York roots, drawing applause. She’s from Hamburg.

“The people around the state just love the ice cream coming out of this factory. It puts a smile on people’s faces,” Hochul said, thanking the many workers gathered for her visit.

“I’m so excited that they’re going to start growing, ” she said of Wells, adding that the work will protect 380 already existing jobs along with adding 270 more.

Predicting the expansion will draw attention and further economic opportunities to Dunkirk, Hochul made one more pun: “This is truly one of the sweetest days of my life.”

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel said the plant’s production will more than double after the expansion is complete.

“I’m thrilled to see the long term commitment that Wells has made to the county,” he said.

Wendel mentioned the plant’s link to Dunkirk Ice Cream, which opened it in 1914, and Fieldbrook Farms. Wells’ investment “ensures that future generations will get to enjoy these products as well,” he said

Fiore said a few words, too. Notably, he gushed about his plant workers.

“Boy, has this team risen to the occasion … your commitment and teamwork have made this possible,” he said. “Together, we can achieve great things, and I’m thrilled to see what the future holds for us.”

Hochul and other officials held a “photo op” scooping ice cream. Then it was time to actually eat it, served by Wells workers, with several toppings available.

Starting at $2.99/week.
