Area youth baseball players, and kids interested in learning the game, had the chance to learn from some collegiate players Saturday.

Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park was descended upon by approximately 85 program participants with the Jamestown Tarp Skunks.

“We’re out here running our first ever baseball camp for kids,” said Christian Dolce, the team manager and the director of business. “We did some running drills, baseball throwing techniques, batting drills, runs and other baseball related techniques. We also served lunch for the kids. Overall it was a great day.”

Events like the baseball camp, and community-focused endeavors, are becoming the status quo for Jamestown’s baseball team.

“It’s all about giving back to our community, providing a high quality, low-cost baseball experience for our fan base,” said Dolce. “We’re always trying to look for new and innovative programming to have our team involved within the community. We’re open for collaborative efforts; we welcome the chance to partner with or work with businesses, companies, schools or non-profits in the area.

Steven Scarfone, Tarp Skunks player No. 18 and outfielder gives double, high-fives to two campers at the Tarp Skunks Baseball Camp, Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Russell E Diethrick Jr. Park. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, Scarfone, in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game held later that evening would crack a monster three-run shot- much to the delight of some of the kids who also attend the camp. “This event was amazing,” said Monica Ruiz, a mother of two program participants. “These guys are loved by a lot of the children. They might as well be Major League Baseball players. Kids look up to them like they are, and I’m ok with that.”

Dolce talked about future, upcoming camps.

“We’re going to do more camps like this in the future,” he said. “The team really seemed to rally around the camp and enjoyed conducting it.”

Tim and Mary Overbeck’s three homeschooled children were overly excited about the Tarp Skunks event.

Brandon Overbeck said, “My favorite part of the Tarp Skunks clinic was learning to bunt and making new friends.”

“I liked learning to bunt and catch,” said Sienna Overbeck.

However, according to Cameron Overbeck, who could barely contain his excitement, stated,

“My favorite part was hanging out with the Tarp Skunks and learning to bunt!”
