Firefighters responded to a reported fire at 6:39 p.m. Friday with smoke reported coming from the kitchen area. Bemus Point firefighters were the first on the scene with Ashville volunteer firefighters arriving shortly after to provide water to Bemus Point’s fire engine while deploying its pond for water dumps. Firefighters also quickly set up tanker filling operations.

The first arriving crew initiated outside ground operations until more firefighters could arrive to begin fighting the fire from inside the house. Lakewood volunteer firefighters arrived with a full crew, and along with Bemus Point firefighters, entered the house to find the fire. Crews were faced with heavy smoke, high winds and rain as they pushed into the fire, according to a post on the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page, before being pulled back due to water supply issues. A second alarm was called for more tankers and interior firefighters. Crews from several departments worked to eventually bring the fire under control. Due to a partial roof collapse, operations were moved from inside the home to outside the home.

The fire was reported out at 9:57 p.m., with crews on the scene until 12:11 a.m.

No one was home when the fire began and no injuries were reported.

Departments responding included Lakewood, Maple Springs, Ellery Center, Fluvanna, Dewittville, Falconer, the county FAST Team and county EMS. County fire investigators said Saturday morning the fire was caused by compromised wiring in the kitchen.
