Wooden Castle To Be Featured At Annual Winter Festival

MAYVILLE — Officials with Mayville’s Winter Festival, set for this weekend, faced one major problem when it came to start building the traditional ice castle: there was no ice.

Instead, the Chamber of Commerce worked with Mayville resident Tim Hull to build a castle made from wood for this year’s festival.

This year’s event officially opened with the lighting of the castle Friday night, and the castle is set to be the backdrop for the festival and lit again Saturday night.

Hull said he volunteered to build the castle after a previous one did not work.

“The Chamber had another that was built for parades and that was found to not work for this,” Hull said. “So, I told them I would build another one.”

Hull is the owner of a CNC router, which he has used before for a few different wood projects. He used the machine to draw out and create the castle.

He said the castle that he and the chamber ended up with for the festival was a combination of a few designs.

“We all came together and picked a few pieces from one and a few from another and this is the design we came up with,” he said.

Hull added that he was glad to have built it and that it was “nice to see because it took quite a bit of work to get it done.”

“It helps the chamber and it feels good to see it be used in the festival,” Hull said.

In the future, Hull said he would build a castle again if he ever needed to. With his CNC he said he always has different projects going, but his projects are not usually as large as the wooden castle for the Mayville Winter Festival is.

Hull encouraged the community to come out and support the Chamber of Commerce, not just at the festival but all year round.

“It’s important to get out and support the Chamber and everything they do for small businesses,” Hull said. “The more people that get involved the more effective they can be.”

The Mayville Winter Festival takes place from Feb 16 to Feb 18 at Lakeside Park on Route 394 in Mayville.
