Falconer Trustees Look To Chadakoin Restoration Project

FALCONER -- The restoration of the Chadakoin River is becoming a popular topic at local city, town and village board meetings.
Vincent Liuzzo, a certified tree arborist, spoke Monday to members of the Falconer Village Board. Liuzzo's presentation revolved around the restoration of the village's portion of the Chadakoin River.
"Cleaning up the Chadakoin is good for everyone, all around," Liuzzo said. "Having a river free of navigation hazards not only leads to a better flowing river, but also aids in drawing tourists who like to canoe, kayak and hike and use the river for recreational activities."
Moreover, Liuzzo pointed out the importance of the river's upkeep, as opposed to just a hypothetical approach regarding the water's management.
"When debris and erosion take place on one side of a river, the flowing water tends to bounce off the waterway's obstruction and slams onto the other side of the river's bank, creating more erosion, more water way obstructions and possibly the redirection of the waterway totally," he said.
Liuzzo was questioned on the funding needed to help restore the river.
"Please, do not let the start-up figures dismay you from this project," he said. "Price is something that can be revised and looked at. We are open to anything that is reasonable and mutually beneficial for all parties."
Village Mayor James Jaroszynski requested that the village's portion of the river restoration project be tabled by the Falconer Village Board until its next work session for further review.
In other news, the village's fire chief reported that the department responded to 59 incidents, 11 of them being fire-related and 48 of them being emergency medical calls for service.
A report from the Parks and Recreation Department on a pathway forward will be presented for the building, funding and creation of proposed pickleball courts in Falconer. As previously reported by The Post-Journal, the village is looking at repurposing its old tennis courts.
