Runners, walkers and military supporters took part Saturday in SUNY Jamestown Community College’s Military Aligned Students Club’s inaugural fundraiser race.
Several dozen people showed up Saturday to walk, run, roll, crawl or to take a brisk stroll at SUNY Jamestown Community College.
The Veteran and Military Aligned Student’s Club hosted an inaugural 5K race, run, walk to raise funds to support club activities and the school’s veteran scholarship program, specifically the Veteran’s Scholarship in Memory of Traci Maybach fund.
Opening remarks were made by Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist and JCC President Daniel DeMarte, prior to the race taking place.
“Military veterans tend to be older than traditional students, have family they have to take care of, have full-time jobs, but are also natural leaders in the classroom,” said DeMarte, a military veteran himself. “We strive to be a welcoming campus and organization. We help military veterans with transition and accessing the programs and services they’ve earned.”
Jamestown Community College has been designated a 2023-24 Military Friendly School by Viqtory Media. More than 1,800 schools participated in a 2023-2024 survey, with 665 earning the designation of Military Friendly.

JCC President Daniel DeMarte gave opening remarks prior to the event.
“This is really exciting,” said veteran Yeidy Bishop, JCC alumnus and the veteran’s club vice president. “Come check out our events; the college is a wonderful organization that has a lot to offer traditional students, but they tend to go above and beyond when it comes to military veterans and their family members. The support is amazing.”
