LBLTJ Performances Of Musical Set To Begin Friday

From left Brycelyn Singletary as Tomika, and Andrew Garvey as Dewey Finn, go over lines in a scene from “School of Rock — The Musical” at the Lucille Ball Little Theatre.

What would you do if your son or daughter were in a rock band at school formed by a substitute teacher?

If you don’t have an answer, you are in good company as the parents at a prepatory school don’t have a clue that their children are either. They think their children are busy learning the three R’s — reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.

“School of Rock — The Musical” to be performed at Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, 18 E. Second St., may provide all your answers.

LBLTJ Board President Holly Weston said because the October musical is the biggest show of the season, and because of name recognition, it made sense to choose “School of Rock — The Musical.”

“The Movie ‘School of Rock’ has such great name recognition and it’s such a great movie, and this (the musical) takes all of that and puts it to music on stage with live actors,” Weston said.

Weston said the October musical is when live musicians are brought in to perform, so the performance also will have a live pit band.

“It’s challenging to find musicians for multiple big musicals every year. The October musical always has been our showstopper, big musical of the season, and I think it will continue to be. … If we need to support the other musicals with (recorded) tracks through out the season, we will,” Weston said.

Weston said one great aspect of the musical at LBLTJ is how area youth can perform on stage with adults.

“We are able to have kids on stage getting experience in a main stage production where they are working with adults, not just a kids’ show. We have multiple kids and adults that play live on stage,” Weston noted.

Both the adults and the students play instruments along pit band which usually doesn’t take place in a musical. “It’s an exciting new thing we get to do with this cast,” Weston added.

According to lbltj.com, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “School of Rock — The Musical” is a two-hour, two-act show (plus intermission), based on the movie “School of Rock.”The show follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a rock band. His goal is to get the students to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out.

The movie, released in 2003, stars Jack Black, Mike White, Joan Cusack, and Sarah Silverman, along with a host of child actors.

Directing the LBLTJ musical is Marie Karbacka.

“It’s absolutely fun,” Karbacka said of directing the musical.

Karbacka, who teaches general music at Washington Middle School grades five through eight; sixth, seventh, and eighth grade chorus, is the adviser for the drama club, and also is the director for school’s musical.

“I remember growing up watching the movie,” Karbacka added.

Karbacka said how Finn instills in the students the love and joy of music is key to both the movie and the musical. In the movie, not every student was in the band, but all the students in Finn’s class enjoyed being part of the group.

When teaching, Karbacka plays that same tune (pun intended).

” I feel like everyone can be a part of music. No one needs to be left out or feel left out. Even if you don’t want to be on stage, there are other roles for you do. Everyone is a part of the team.
