Labor Day Weekend Just Ducky In Cassadaga

CASSADAGA -- The Labor Day weekend in Cassadaga was a busy time for all with many activities for three days. There was something for nearly everyone to see or participate in during that time.
One of the many spark plugs for the weekend was village trustee Cindy Flaherty who made certain all had the schedule of the weekend.
On Saturday was the event known as the CassadagaMan at the beach area on Park Avenue beginning at 8 a.m. There was a 1.2-mile swim followed by a 56-mile bike run, and a 13.3-mile run. Coach Mark Wilson was in charge and spent all of Friday setting up stands, markers, and starting and finishing places. This was well attended. The members of the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department had a four-hour boot drive at the four corners.
Sunday featured the Farmers' Market at the Ames Common from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. The Cassadaga American Legion Post 1280 held a chicken barbecue take out. The annual boat parade was held beginning at 4:30 p.m. despite the high winds. The theme this year was "Pirates." One of the prizes for the most colorful decorations was presented to John and Susan Sipos. At 5 p.m. at the Cassadaga floating stage was a free concert featuring Party McFly. Refreshments were available. Some came to the concert by boat, and some by car. This event was very well attended.
Monday featured the Labor Day Parade along Maple Avenue. Some of the many participants included the Chautauqua County Sheriff including Sheriff James Quattrone, who also handed out lots of candy to bystanders. Steve Lehnen led the parade in his World War II Jeep. The Cassadaga American Legion Post 1280 Honor Guard was followed by members of the Legion riding in a trailer. There were bands, marching units, and fire equipment from Cassadaga and Lily Dale, and the marching unit from the Sheridan Fire Department. County Clerk Larry Barmore was one of the many handing out candy to those on the side lines. Some of the many well known citizens watching the parade included Sheila Barris Kroon, Larry and Janice Carlson, James and Fran Odell, Robert and Regina Burlingame and Bertha Fredrickson. All in all, several hundred watched the parade which concluded at the Cassadaga Firehouse on Mill Street. Cassadaga Village Clerk Annette McChesney was the parade marshal.
Following the parade the annual Ducky Derby was held at the lake outlet on Maple Avenue and Mill Street. Dennis Collins was the announcer who called off the names of the luck duck winners.The Ames Common featured vendors and food stands. The weekend of events concluded with the Bicycle/Walk Dice Run.
The events of the weekend were sponsored by the Village of Cassadaga, Wilson Endurance Sports, Citizens for a Better Cassadaga, American Legion Post 1280 Auxiliary, and the Cassadaga Lakes Association.
