Sexual assault, battery and domestic violence are all crimes. Two city women stand ready to help victims of those crimes.
Nurse practitioners Jennifer Wilcox and Tammy Bimber have bigger and loftier plans for victims to seeking help, aid and justice. Wilcox and Bimber decided to start a wellness clinic and forensic center in Jamestown after they looked around the city and knew something more needed to be done to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
“My partner and I did some research and seen there was a need for a clinic which specialized in post-sexual assault treatments and services,” Wilcox said. “Both Tammy and I are certified as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (S.A.N.E.) and Tammy is also New York Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (NYSAFE) certified.”
The women opened the Wellness and Forensic Center and have a host of medical and post-incident services they provide for those in need.
“We provide acute sexual assault exams and evidence collection,” said Wilcox. “Along with medical exams for concerns with sexual assault, physical assault or suspected child abuse, neglect and maltreatment. Also, wrap-around care (follow-up) medical care.
The Wellness Clinic also offers the following: photographs of injuries for police and court actions; initial and repeat testing for sexually transmitted diseases; prevention treatment for STDs, including AIDS; and other medications or preventive services that include emergency contraceptive and tetanus. The grassroots effort is self-funded, and community supported.
“We’re currently running a fundraiser, we’re raffling off tickets to the Buffalo Bills home-opener game against the Raiders, on Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. two tickets, and Bills vs Buccaneers, two tickets on Oct. 26. Also, we crowd-fundrais and do other things to raise money,” added Wilcox.
To report a sexual assault or request for services, victims may contact the Wellness Center at 716-488-7293, or contact the Anew Center Crisis Line 800-252-8748.
