Panama Central School JCC Leadership Class Holds Drive For UCAN

PANAMA -- Panama Central School's Jamestown Community College Leadership Class is holding a collection drive for the United Christian Advocacy Network's Men's Homeless Shelter.
The class, taught by Helen Keefe, is made up of a group of seniors John Watson, Clarissa Bouge, Harlee Morse, Lilly Devine, and Haleigh Cooper.
Each semester the class is required to do a service project as part of the class, and Bouge said they decided on UCAN to help people.
"I think it's important to help people in need and this was an easy project to do because people are willing to donate and help," Bouge said.
So far the class has made boxes and flyers for the drive. The boxes are at five different locations.
"The whole school is involved, grades kindergarten through 12," Cooper said. "The teachers are involved. Boxes are at the Ashville General Store, the Lakewood movie theater, the Ashville Dollar General, Panama Diner and Dan's Car Wash. There are also boxes at the school."
The drive continues until Oct. 12 and bins will be out at special events.
"We will have collection bins out at the homecoming football game and parade," Morse said. "The parade is on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. and the game is Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Clymer."
The class is accepting donations in gift cards and non perishable items. Gift cards can be from places like Walmart, or anywhere people can buy food.
"We accept drink mixes and cans of tea," Devine said. "We are accepting cans of food and things that won't go bad like cereal. People can donate toiletries like laundry soap and toothpaste. We are also looking for warmer winter clothing, like long sleeve shirts and socks."
Once the drive is over, it will be up to the class to collect the items and bring them to UCAN. Watson said the shelter fully supports the drive.
"Billy Witherspoon, the assistant director, is fully supportive because they need these items," Watson said.
Watson added that this project is the only one the class is doing this semester but there will be a second one next semester that will be something different. This is also all of the students' first time doing a drive like this.
The class also asks for donations of blankets, and that people share information about the drive on social media.
