Legislator Involved In Fatal Westfield Crash

WESTFIELD — A Chautauqua County legislator was involved in a fatal two-vehicle accident last week, the Westfield Police Department reports.

In a release issued Wednesday afternoon, the department said the incident occurred around 2:55 p.m. July 6 involving a sports utility vehicle and motorcycle on Hardenburg Road. During the investigation, it was determined the vehicle in the northbound lane, driven by John Hemmer, 77, of Route 20, crossed into the southbound lane and struck a motorcycle being operated by Jeffrey DuChaine, 83, of 7521 Martin Road.

Hemmer is serving his sixth term as legislator in Mayville. His district includes the town of Ripley, village of Westfield and town of Westfield. In addition, he has served on the Westfield Town Planning Board, the Concord Grape Heritage Association and the Westfield Moose.

DuChaine was taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital by Westfield Rescue and later flown to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. He later succumbed to the injuries.

Hemmer was not injured and refused treatment. The accident is still under investigation.

Westfield Police were assisted by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department and the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office. No charges have been filed, but the case is under investigation.

DuChaine, according to his obituary, was a 1958 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central School and had worked for Renolds Ajax in Westfield for more than 60 years.
