Municipalities across the county are preparing for the Fourth of July.
Places with events this year include Lakewood, Mayville, Dunkirk, Findley Lake, Bemus Point and Cassadaga.
In the village of Lakewood, the Firecracker Race that is put on by the YMCA is held in the morning and ends around noon. Food and craft vendors will set up in the village by noon.
“The Quister band will be playing and Group Ther-Happy will have bands playing on their deck throughout the day,” Julie Toennis, deputy clerk and events coordinator, said. “We will end the day with the fireworks display at 10 p.m. and we will also show off our new playground, which is exciting.”
In Mayville, there is a full day of events scheduled for the first time since the pandemic. Registration for the parade begins at 8 a.m. with the parade itself at 10 a.m. The main routes through the village, Routes 394 and 430, will close at 9:30 a.m. for the parade. Following the parade there will be a “day of festivities” at Lakeside Park, including live music, food, games, raffles, family fun, face painting and a petting zoo.
“The fireworks show begins at 10 p.m. and will be shot from barges on the lake, which is new for us,” Rita Jacobson, one of the people in charge of the day, said. “Boaters are asked to be respectful of the shooting zone.”
Findley Lake will hold its traditional flare lighting beginning at 9:30 p.m. with the fireworks show held directly after at 10 p.m. They will be shot off at the north end of the lake, on the hill behind the town barns.
“There will be other activities during the day, like the duck race and boat parade,” Mina town Supervisor Rebecca Brumagin said.
“The Findley Lake Great Duck Race” will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Waterwheel Overlook. There will be both children and adult prizes available.
Findley Lake’s boat parade is sponsored by Paradise Bay and Compass Bar and Grille. It begins at 10 a.m. and boats can be registered at the Gazebo downtown. The theme this year is Favorite Holiday.
There will also be a chicken barbecue in Findley Lake at the volunteer fire department, beginning at noon until it is gone. The price is $15 a dinner.
Cassadaga’s lighting of the flares begins at 9:30 p.m., with flares costing $2 each. The event is through the Cassadaga Lake Association, which sells the flares to the residents of Cassadaga and there will also be a boat parade.
The city of Dunkrik’s celebration takes place on July 1, 3 and 4, and includes activities such as the Summer Jam on the Ave Youth three-on-three Basketball Tournament for grades four through 12 on Central Avenue by City Hall at 9 a.m., and the ninth Annual Marauder Trotter 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. at Wright Park on July 1, live music and bands in Memorial Park on July 3 and 4, and fireworks at dusk on July 4.
In Bemus Point there will be fireworks set off at night from the barges on Bemus Bay that will be visible throughout the entire village.
