Road Work Ahead: Washington Street Ready For Construction

Traffic cones have been placed on Washington Street in Jamestown, north of West Eighth Street, reducing one lane of traffic in each direction to at least 22nd Street. Drainage as well as foundation work for new traffic signals along Washington began last year. A multi-million dollar state Department of Transportation project will include the conversion of the road from four lanes to three lanes after the surface is first milled and then paved. A contract completion date of June 30 has been cited by a state DOT spokesperson. City officials for years had discussed an overhaul of Washington. The highlight of the project will be the establishment of a middle lane for left turns and new 5-foot bike lanes with 2-foot buffer areas along both sides of Washington Street.
