A federal grand jury indictment against a 36-year-old Falconer man is believed to be tied to the 2014 disappearance and homicide of a Jamestown man.

U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced Friday that Anthony Neubauer was being held on a charge of kidnapping resulting in death.

Though details regarding what led to the indictment were scant, the local U.S. Attorney’s Office said Neubauer allegedly kidnapped an individual on May 27, 2014, and then transported them from New York to Pennsylvania — resulting in the victim’s death.

In its news release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office did not identify the victim by name, only using the initials “J.A.” However, the initials and date do match the disappearance of Joseph D. Anthony, last seen May 27, 2014, in the 700 block of East Second Street in Jamestown. Then 43 years old, Anthony reportedly left all his belongings at his Broadhead Avenue residence.

In late June 2015, the FBI executed a federal search warrant in Chandlers Valley, located south of Sugar Grove. Law enforcement from New York and Pennsylvania also descended on Warren County.

Federal agents became involved in the case due to the investigation potentially crossing state lines, Jamestown police said at the time.

An FBI public affairs specialist who was at the Warren County site in 2015 would not comment on the subject of the warrant. However, it’s believed the days-long effort in Chandlers Valley was tied to Anthony’s disappearance.

It’s not clear if anything was recovered in Warren. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not specify where in Pennsylvania that Neubauer transported “J.A.”

The indictment is the result of an investigation by the Jamestown Police Department and FBI. JPD referred questions Friday to the Buffalo office of the FBI, which did not return a call for comment.

Neubauer was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah McCarthy; he is being held pending a detention hearing on Tuesday.

As noted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the kidnapping resulting in death charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison.
