When Kelly Mareri speaks about natural health and wellness, you can hear the passion in her voice.
She first started learning about natural health when her children were younger. She said they would develop ear infections and all she could do was give them Tylenol, and then get them to their doctor, and maybe get a prescription for some antibiotics.
“And it was this vicious cycle. So I wanted to have something that I could do for my children, just kind of herbal homecare,” Mareri said.
So after working for IBM for 34 years, she retired and made the switch, to follow her passion. She recently opened Natural Living, Holistic Wellness, located at 1771 Foote Ave. Ext. The grand opening is set for Friday and Saturday.
“I have been studying in the field of natural health for the past 28 years, starting with the teaching of herbalist Dr. John Christopher. I wanted to understand and work with principles to help my children stay as health as posssible,” Mareri said.

While at IBM, she went back to school and earned a master’s in Holistic Nutrition and a a doctorate in Naturopathy.
“I was then fortunate to meet and work with Faith Luce, and all the wonderful women at HerbsR4U. They had a mission to help our community stay healthy, or face challenges through natural complimentary solutions. I was at HerbsR4U for many years and now feel it is my turn to support the community by providing a place where people can seek natural solutions for better living,” Mareri added.
And at her store, not only does she sell herbs and oils, but she holds classes, and gives out information. Mareri said she tell a customer what the product is, what’s in the product, and tell what each element does. Mareri also will give customers scientific references in case they still have questions or concerns. She said she is not a medical doctor, and she does not take the place of medical practices.
“And you should always see a physician if there’s a serious medical issue,” Mareri noted.
Like Mareri, store manager Amy Mahaffey is also very passionate about wellness and natural health. Mahaffey also worked at HerbsR4U.
“I’ve always been interested in just helping people and giving back to the community. I had such a lovely experience working and learning down the street herbs are for you that I just wanted to continue that. And give back to the community at that point,” Mahaffey said.
The store is open Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is not open Sunday or Monday. For more information call (716) 488-7298.
