LAKEWOOD — Concerns over traffic were raised regarding plans to construct a new car wash along East Fairmount Avenue in the village.
Those worries were noted during a public hearing Monday by a member of the Lakewood Village Board.
Joseph Spino of Elma is looking to build a Blue Buffalo Car Wash at 373 E. Fairmount Ave., the current site of Larry Spacc Lakewood Resale. Site plans submitted for review call for the removal of the building currently on the property and construction of a new 3,150 square foot facility.
Spino told members of the Village Board during Monday’s public hearing that the car wash would be drive-through and include vacuums along a sidewalk near the property. The facility would not be open 24 hours, he said.
Trustee Ellen Barnes said she was a little worried about how busy Fairmount Avenue can get during the day.
“I have a traffic concern because Fairmount Avenue is so congested,” Barnes said. “It’s just not a nice highway, and Fairdale is a major access down here to the village. People use it and (I’m) a little concerned if people think they can wait in line and come out on there.”
She added, “We have several driveways there for different businesses. We’ve got the bank and then the old Reed’s Jewelers. There’s a trailer court. There’s a street and the carpet place, and everything is right there and it’s very congested.”
Spino said the only entrance and exit to the car wash would come off Fairdale Avenue. He said more than 20 vehicles could be “stacked” in the parking lot before they go through the car wash itself.
Barnes said her concern is with vehicles waiting to enter the car wash that might back up traffic on Fairmount. She requested that the New York State Department of Transportation be contacted to look into the plans; otherwise, she said, she liked the design for the business.
Spino, who said he would contact the state and ensure any permit is secured, said two Blue Buffalo car washes were under construction in Western New York while another, in addition to Lakewood, is in development.
After the public hearing, the Village Board granted the approval of a negative declaration pursuant to the State Environmental Quality Review Act for the project. The board also approved a resolution designating the village as the lead agency as it relates to the environmental review and assessment of the proposed car wash.
After the votes, Mayor Randy Holcomb congratulated Spino.
In the Lakewood area, there currently are three car wash businesses: E-Z Clean Car Wash, Don’s Car Wash and All Makes Express Services, all located on Fairmount Avenue.
