Severe Weather Rolls Through Chautauqua County
A fallen tree rests against the side of the 300 Willard St. residence after it collapsed during stormy weather Monday night.
A severe thunderstorm rolled through the Jamestown and surrounding area Monday evening causing heavy rain and wind damage.
According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Kirk Apfell, the storm was a result of perfect conditions.
“We had hot, humid air on the surface and it made for a favorable enviornnment for a thunderstorm,” Apfell said.
A severe storm warning had been issued at 6:39 p.m., calling for severe wind and high winds. A resident at 19 Johnson St. said a tree limb narrowly missed her brand-new vehicle. Around the corner, however, a home at 300 Willard St. was struck by a large tree.
“During a thunderstorm there are stronger more localized wind gusts,” Apfell said. “But the one reading we have from the Jamestown Airport clocked in at 43 mph around 7:27 p.m.”
The main weather event passed through quickly, and according Apfell, the rest of the week looks like it’s shaping up to be rather tame by comparison.
“It looks like it’s going to be quiet for the rest of the week,” he said.
