Jamestown’s U.S. Congressman received a first-hand tour of improvements following renovations at The Resource Center Carl Cappa Building.
Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, witnessed the renovations at the facility, located at 880-890 E. Second St., while taking a tour with The Resource Center staff Tuesday.
Heather Brown, The Resource Center program operations assistant executive director, said 10,000 people visit The Resource Center facility each year for medical treatment. She said only about 10 percent of those who visit the building are developmentally disabled. She added patients receive dental, primary care and behavioral health care services at the Cappa Building.
Brown said the initial phase of the renovations was replacing the external facade, which cost $550,000 and was completed in the spring of 2016. The first phase of the rehabilitation project was a new dental expansion, which cost $328,000 and was completed in December 2016. The second phase, which is ongoing, is a redesign of the primary care center; remodeled integrated waiting rooms and new nurses stations and business offices. This phase cost $364,000 and is expected to be completed this month.
There are still two more phases of renovations The Resource Center officials would like to complete at the facility. Phase 3 renovations would be to redesign the flow and upgrade the dental area. The last phase would be to redesign the flow and upgrade the primary care area. These two phases would cost $318,000. Brown said they are hoping to receive a state grant to fund the final two renovation phases.
While taking the tour, Reed discussed with The Resource Center staff physician and support staff recruitment and the need for integrated medical records. He said the facility is a fine example of an integrated model of health care.
“When they walk through the door, they have all the services they need,” he said. “They look at the whole patient and provide a one-stop shop so patients get all of their health care needs met.”
