A small token of appreciation goes a long way when it comes to Blue Star Mothers' Christmas care packages.

The Blue Star Mothers Lake Erie NY 4 chapter are gearing up for their biggest care package campaign, but have fallen short on goods to stock the boxes. The group is looking for last-second donations to send overseas for the troops deployed to brighten their holiday season.

In a final effort to make sure the boxes are full, the Blue Star Mothers collected items Friday as well as this morning from 8-10 a.m. at Fluvanna Community Church. President Susan Rowley said items such as beef sticks, beef jerky, individual water enhancers, large bottles of shampoo, power bars, breakfast bars, peanuts, white socks and other personal care or snack items are needed. Rowley said there are 850 names of deployed military members from the area that have been submitted for Christmas care packages this year.

"(The care packages) are important because our community is letting them know the work they are do to protect us is appreciated," Rowley said. "These boxes of love from Western New York mean so much to them."

Rowley said she recently met a few Army Rangers that were in town for a wedding. Once they heard she was involved in the Blue Star Mothers, she said they thanked her and explained how much they appreciated the care packages.

"They received it last Christmas meant to them and they asked me to let everyone know how much they appreciated being thought of," Rowley said.
