Amish Boy Dies In Conewango Accident
CONEWANGO — A 14-year-old Amish male from Conewango died Friday morning due to a logging accident.
The victim, identified as Neil E. I. Raber, was believed to be using the cart to pull a log downhill in a wooded area near 5782 Northeast Road in Conewango.
According to Howie VanRensselaer, Cattaraugus County coroner, Raber fell to the ground shortly before 9 a.m. when his cart hit an unknown object. He was reportedly “crushed” by one of the logs, VanRensselaer said.
Raber was pronounced dead at the scene. He was reportedly in the woods with his father when the accident occurred.
VanRensselaer was assisted at the scene by Dr. Brian Walters, director of emergency services for Cattaraugus County.
An investigation was conducted by Lieutenant David Schuman and James Grice with the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office and Robert Rogers with the New York State Forest Rangers. Police said an investigation is ongoing.
Randolph EMS, along with Ellington and Conewango fire officials, responded to the scene.
