Patrons Pack Johnny’s Lunch To Celebrate 80 Years

There is a lot of consistency when it comes to Johnny’s Lunch.

For one thing, the business has been around for 80 years. Another is that people can always count on good food at an affordable price. Also, customers, most of the time, order the same items.

Whether your order is three hot dogs with everything; or a cheeseburger; Johnny’s fries with sauce; and a milkshake; customers regularly order their favorite items each time they visit the Jamestown area landmark.

This was no different Tuesday as customers packed 966 Fairmount Ave. to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Johnny’s Lunch. For the special event, Sam Teresi, Jamestown mayor, presented a proclamation to Gust and Dianne Calamunci, Johnny’s Lunch owners. Even though Teresi has presented dozens of proclamations to worthy businesses and individuals during his tenure as mayor, Tuesday’s Johnny’s Lunch recognition was special for the lifelong Jamestown resident.

”This one is personal. Dianne and Gust are like family. The business is part of all of our lives,” he said. ”It’s not on my diet, but, every once in awhile, you have to treat yourself.”

The mayor said his usual order is three hot dogs, with ketchup and mustard, no onions; French fries; and a diet Pepsi.

”The burgers are good, but it’s all about the Texas hots,” he said.

Teresi said in high school when he was done working around midnight, he would go to Johnny’s with his friends and coworkers. He would order three hot dogs, two of his friends would order six and one friend would order 12.

”He would eat nine on the spot and save the other three for breakfast,” Teresi said.

Matt Hanley, executive assistant to the mayor, said he always gets four hot dogs with sauce, mustard and ketchup, with a Mountain Dew. Now a Jamestown resident, Hanley was originally from Buffalo, but that didn’t stop him from being a regular at Johnny’s Lunch. He said he would visit his grandparents, who lived in the Jamestown area, who would take him to the long-standing business.

”Even though I’m from Buffalo, I’ve been coming here my whole life,” Hanley said.

Johnny’s Lunch has always been a family tradition for Gloria Carey of Ashville, who said her mother, Lillian Blood, worked at the business when it was located in Jamestown’s Brooklyn Square. Carey’s order is always hot dogs with sauce.

Douglas and Judy Knopp just moved back to the Jamestown area after living in Rochester. Judy said one of the first things they did when they returned was to visit Johnny’s Lunch. She’s not the only one in her family that wants to visit the famous hot dog stand when returning to the Jamestown area. She has family coming in from three different states for the Fourth of July, ”and we’re coming to Johnny’s,” Judy said.

Judy added they always get the same thing the two hot dog special, which comes with fries and a drink. Douglas said he enjoys the atmosphere that accompany’s Johnny’s Lunch.

”This is just a neat place,” he said.

Johnny’s Lunch was started in 1936 in Jamestown’s Brooklyn Square by Johnny and Minnie Colera. In 1974, the restaurant moved to 966 Fairmount Ave. The business has been operated by Gust and Dianne Calamunci since 1975.

Starting at $3.50/week.
