Sanford Sentenced To 15 Years To Life In Prison For Role In 2014 Murder Of Mary Whitaker

For his role in the murder of Westfield resident Mary E. Whitaker, Charles Sanford was given an indeterminate sentence of 15 years to life in state prison. The sentence, handed out Friday in Chautauqua County Court, is the result of a second-degree murder charge, to which Sanford pleaded guilty in November.

Sanford, 32, was sentenced on federal charges Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Buffalo. He was handed a 15-year federal prison sentence for illegally possessing a firearm. Whitaker, the 61-year-old concert violinist who regularly performed with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, was found dead inside her 8448 Titus Road home on Aug. 20, 2014, after what police referred to as an attempted burglary turned deadly.
