Firefighters extinguish fire in vacant Allen Street home

2 min read

Jamestown firefighters spent nearly five hours at the scene of a house fire at 433 Allen St., Jamestown, late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

A 911 caller reported a house on fire at 10:44 p.m. Thursday. First responders found a working fire in a vacant and condemned 2.5-story wood-frame, balloon-constructed residential home. The first floor was well involved with fire spreading to the second floor and attic/roof area. Crews used a defensive attack because there were no concerns of fire exposures or the fire spreading to nearby properties. Fire vented to the exterior of the building on the south and west sides, with electricity to the home shut off before the fire.

Engine 3 secured water from a nearby hydrant, with Engine 4 pumping water and using hand lines on the south side of the building. Ladder 1 set up for an aerial master stream while making a second tap to the fire hydrant across the street. Water was on the fire within a few minutes of firefighters arriving until the fire was knocked down. At that point, firefighters transitioned to an interior attack and overhaul operations.

The first and second floors were heavily damaged, as was the attic space and roof. The building remained structurally intact and is not a concern for imminent collapse, according to a report from Jamestown Fire Department Chief Ryan Roush. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Twelve off-duty firefighters were called in to support firefighters on the scene and respond to other 911 calls in the city. No injuries were reported.
