LAKEWOOD-BUSTI POLICE DEPARTMENT
— William J. Bognar, 45, was charged Feb. 6 with driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a breath test, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and speeding. According to police, at about 11:20 p.m., officers, with the help of New York State Police Troopers, responded to Route 474 in Ashville for a report of a possible motor vehicle accident, and a female who could be heard in distress. Upon arrival, police said, officers observed a vehicle off the road in a snow bank, and a female with facial lacerations, who was the passenger, standing near the wrecked vehicle. During the investigation, officers were told that Bognar allegedly had fled the scene, leaving the passenger behind because he was fearful of potential charges. Once the scene was secure, police said, officers began searching for Bognar. Officers followed Bognar’s footprints in the snow for about one half mile before finding him in a random driveway. Police said Bognar allegedly smelled of intoxicants, had slurred speech, and had blood-shot eyes, and was detained for investigation. After the scene was cleared, Bognar was placed in custody, and due to inclement weather, taken to the LBPD station in Lakewood for field sobriety testing. Bognar allegedly admitted to officers that he had been drinking, but allegedly refused all testing. Bognar will be in Busti Town Court later.
