Two teens die in Allegany County crash

WELLSVILLE — Two teenagers died after an early morning crash on Tarantine Boulevard Saturday.

At 2:24 a.m., State Police at Amity responded to a single vehicle collision. An investigation determined that a 2020 Buick Encore was traveling eastbound. The Buick exited the north shoulder of the road on a sharp curve striking a utility pole on the driver’s side. The Buick had a total of six teen occupants.

The 17-year-old operator, 14-year-old front passenger, 16-year-old and 15-year-old rear passengers had minor injuries. They were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital.

Derrick J. Smith, 17, of Canisteo, was riding in the tailgate area of the SUV and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Gavin Odell, 18 of Canisteo, was sitting behind the operator and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled for both deceased. There were no signs of impairment.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

— SHERMAN — At 1:45 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the area of West Main Street in the village for a report of a vehicle that drove off the road and caused damage to multiple items. The vehicle fled the scene but was later located and the operator was identified as Justin B Whitehead, 36, of Sherman. Whitehead was found to be driving while intoxicated and was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Office where he was processed and later released with appearance tickets.

— SHERMAN — Around 6:44 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a report of a vehicle hitting two parked cars in the village before fleeing the area. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle that fled the scene in a ditch on Mount Pleasant Road in the town of Chautauqua. The operator was identified as Brent Roberts, 32, of the town of Chautauqua. Through an investigation it was found that Roberts was driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Sheriff’s Office where he was later released with tickets.

— At 12:05 a.m. Sunday, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Fairmount Avenue for a vehicle violating the vehicle and traffic law. The operator was identified as Charles Carlson, 59, of Ashville, and through an investigation was found to be driving while intoxicated. He was taken into custody and later released with appearance tickets.

— ELLERY — At around 1:12 a.m. Saturday, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Fluvanna Town Line Road. The operator was identified as Wendy S. Best, 51, of Jamestown. Further investigation found Best to be driving while intoxicated. Best was charged with DWI, DWI per se, and Moved from lane unsafely. She will be in town court later.

— SHERMAN — At around 10:34 p.m., the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Route 430. The operator was identified as David D. Detweiler Jr., 25, of Sherman. Further investigation found Detweiler to be DWI. He was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI, moving from lane unsafely, failing to stop at stop sign, and improper or unsafe turn/without signal. He will answer for his charges in the Town of Sherman Court.

JAMESTOWN POLICE

DEPARTMENT

— Jason Swartz, 40, was charged with second-degree criminal contempt.

At 2 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to a southside residence for a check-the-well-being of a female domestic violence victim. Dispatch advised that a male suspect, who is the defendant in a valid stay-away Order of Protection, was possibly inside the residence with the victim. Upon arrival, officers made contact with both the protected party and the male suspect, who was identified as Swartz.

He was taken into custody and held pending arraignment.

— Daniel Garcia, 55, of Jamestown was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and having arrest warrants.

At approximately 7:50 a.m. Saturday, officers conducted a traffic stop at Forest and South Avenues. During the investigation, officers determined that the driver, Garcia, had his state driving privileges revoked and was the subject of several active arrest warrants issued by Jamestown City Court.

Garcia was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jamestown City Jail. He was also issued multiple uniform traffic tickets and was being held pending arraignment.
