DUNKIRK — A Van Buren Point woman was critically injured after a one-car accident on Route 5 near Willow Road late Saturday night.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies report the incident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies located a vehicle that had overturned after traveling off the road and striking a street sign, utility pole and tree.

The operator of the vehicle, Sharon D. Barnes, was driving east when it appears her vehicle traveled onto the shoulder of the road and then continued off into a ditch. Barnes, 79, was reported to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. She was transported by Alstar EMS and County Medic to Brooks-TLC Hospital System where she was eventually transported to UPMC Hamot in critical condition.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by East Dunkirk and West Dunkirk Fire Department, Alstar EMS and County EMS. Route 5 was closed for a period of time while the scene was being cleared. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

JAMESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

— A Jamestown man who was being held temporarily on a warrant found additional trouble while being locked up.

Jamestown police report around 5:20 p.m. Saturday, Phillip P. Gardner, 42, was brought in to be held temporarily on an outstanding Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office warrant. While Gardner was in a holding cell, he became disorderly and intentionally caused damage to property in the cell belonging to the city. Gardner was subsequently charged with third-degree criminal mischief. He was released to the sheriff’s officer and will be in Jamestown City Court later.

— A Jamestown resident wanted on active felony warrants was nabbed by Jamestown police on Friday.

Officers were patrolling the west side of the city when they observed William R. Tilyou, 33, on a porch of a residence. Besides the warrants, Tilyou had an order of protection to stay away from the residence he was at. When Tilyou spotted the police, he hid before officers were able to take him into custody. After checking the residence where it was believed that he went into, Tilyou was located hiding underneath the porch of the residence. Tilyou was given several commands to come out, however he failed to comply.

With the assistance of Jamestown Police K9 Kal, Tilyou was taken into custody without further incident and was transported to city jail. Tilyou is charged with his arrest warrants in addition to first-degree felony criminal contempt and felony aggravated family offense.

Jamestown Police were also assisted by Chautauqua County Sheriff’s K-9 Bentley.
