JAMESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

¯ Arnaldo Mateo Jr., 22, of Buffalo, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree grand larceny. Officers responded at 7:37 p.m. on Sunday to the south side of the city for a man reportedly trying to steal a dirt bike. An investigation found that a man and another person came from Buffalo to Jamestown to purchase a dirt bike. During the transaction, Mateo and the other person allegedly gave a large sum of counterfeit money and attempted to flee. The owner called 911 and later confronted Mateo several blocks away and was able to get the bike back. Mateo and a woman reportedly fled the area in an SUV after a hit-and-run accident in a parking lot across from UPMC Chautauqua. The vehicle was stopped by officers before taking off at a high rate of speed and later left the city. During the investigation officers learned the suspects in the vehicle allegedly threw what appeared to be a handgun onto the ground near North Main and Fifth streets. The vehicle was later found in Erie County, and Mateo was taken into custody and turned over to Jamestown police. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges were expected.
