City felon charged with having loaded gun

DUNKIRK — A Dunkirk man, a two-time convicted felon found early Saturday morning with an illegally possessed and loaded handgun, is facing a number of charges.

Dunkirk police report around 1:46 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle in area of Lake Shore Drive West and Pike Street.

The operator, identified as Byron Oaks Jr. of 717 Central Ave., apartment 17, was charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended registration. A subsequent search of Oaks located an illegally possessed and loaded .40-caliber handgun. Oaks, due to his status as convicted felon, cannot legally possess a pistol or obtain a pistol permit in the State of New York.

He was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon as a loaded firearm; third-degree criminal possession of a weapon due to previous felony conviction; second-degree governmental obstruction and additional traffic violations.

Oaks was transported to Dunkirk Police Headquarters where he was held pending arraignment.

LAKEWOOD-BUSTI POLICE DEPARTMENT

¯ Greggory J. Schaefer, 47, of West Seneca, was charged with driving while intoxicated, DWI per se and speed in zone. Officers stopped a vehicle at 1:15 a.m. Sunday on East Fairmount Avenue for traveling at a high rate of speed. Schaefer was taken into custody following an investigation and is scheduled to appear in Busti Town Court later.

¯ Sheena D. Cruz, 34, of Jamestown, was charged with petit larceny. Officers were alerted at 7:43 p.m. Friday to a larceny in progress at Walmart. Cruz allegedly stole $183.24 worth of merchandise. Cruz is scheduled to appear in court later.

¯ Katelyn M. McChesney, 29, of Jamestown, was charged with petit larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Officers responded to Walmart at 6:42 p.m. Friday for a reported shoplifting. It was learned that McChesney allegedly took items without paying. She is scheduled to appear in Busti Town Court later.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

¯ CHAUTAUQUA — Harry J. Gonzalez, 77, of Chautauqua was charged witih DWI, DWI per se and failure to keep righit at 7:35 p.m. Oct. 25 on Route 430 in Chautauqua. According to a police report, deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle accident. After investigation it was reportedly found that Gonzalez had driven while intoxicated. He will be in Chautauqua Town Court later.

¯ GERRY — At about 7:19 p.m. Sunday, Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Gerry-Ellington Road for a reported altercation.

Upon arrival deputies located Douglas L. Woodard, 29, of Jamestown, at the scene. After an investigation it was found that Woodard had arrived at the residence without invitation and proceeded to engage in an altercation with the resident. Woodard was taken into custody and charged with aggravated family offense, second-degree criminal contempt, fourth-degree criminal obstruction of breathing oof blood circulation, criminal mischief, petit larceny, and harassment.

Woodard was taken to the Chautauqua County Jail pending arraignment. Woodard will answer to his charges in the town of Gerry Court at a later date.

FREDONIA

¯ STOCKTON — A Stockton man has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

At 7:45 p.m. troopers charged Todd R. Lawson, 39. Lawson was stopped after troopers observing his vehicle crossing over the solid double yellow lines on State Route 60 in the town of Pomfret. Troopers noted the smell of beverage alcohol, as well as failure of standardized field sobriety tests at the scene. Lawson was arrested and transported to SP Fredonia for processing. A chemical breath test revealed him to have a .13% BAC.

Lawson was released on an appearance ticket for the town of Pomfret court for early next month.
