MAYVILLE — Firefighters worked into the early hours Tuesday battling a fire that ripped through a longstanding village restaurant.

Chautauqua County fire dispatch said a passing police patrol spotted smoke coming from the Mayville Diner, 7 W. Chautauqua St., around 10:45 p.m. Monday. The structure fire was confirmed shortly thereafter, and crews from several nearby departments were called.

The diner is across the street from the Mayville Fire Department.

The area surrounding the diner was closed to traffic as firefighters tried to douse the blaze. Photographs and video posted to social media showed the building almost completely engulfed by flames.

By midnight, fire could still be seen periodically coming from the diner’s roof. An excavator was later brought to the scene.

Fire investigators were summoned, though no cause has been announced as of Tuesday morning.
