JAMESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT
¯ Fernando Velazquez, 31, of Jamestown was charged Wednesday with petit larceny and false personation. At 11:15 a.m. officers responded to Tops Friendly Markets on Washington Street for the report of a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival officers spoke with store representatives who explained that a Hispanic male had tried leaving the store with a shopping cart full of items that were not purchased. The male was later identified as Velazquez after he initially provided officers with a false name and birthdate. Velazquez was subsequently transported to Jamestown City Jail and charged.
¯ Lavern L. Riley, 35, of Jamestown was charged Wednesday with third-degree criminal mischief. At 12:49 p.m., officers responded to 33 Broadhead Ave. for a criminal mischief complaint. After investigation it was found that around midnight Riley had punched and broke a 62-inch television. The television was determined to be worth about $800. Riley was located on scene, taken into custody and transported to Jamestown City Jail where he is being held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court at a later date.
LAKEWOOD-BUSTI POLICE DEPARTMENT
¯ LAKEWOOD — Lisa A. Hayes, 38, of Jamestown was charged Wednesday with petit larceny, trespass and third-degree burglary. At 10:18 a.m. Hayes was observed at Wal-Mart and recognized by an employee as a person who had been previously advised not to enter the store due to a previous incident. The police were then contacted. When Hayes was taken into custody she was found in possession of unpurchased property that she had taken from Wal-Mart. The value of said property was $9.68. She will appear in Busti Town Court Tuesday.
NEW YORK STATE POLICE
¯ Dane Sobocinski, 28, of Russell, Pa., was charged Tuesday with third-degree insurance fraud and 10 counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Investigation at the NYS Police of Jamestown were informed by the New York State Department of Labor that Sobocinski collected over $3,000 in unemployment insurance while he was actually employed. Sobocinski was placed under arrest, processed at SP Jamestown and released with appearance tickets directing him to appear in Jamestown City Court at a later date.
¯ Michael Sheets, 52, of Warren, Pa., was charged Sunday with driving while intoxicated. Sheets was pulled over on Spencer Road in Jamestown for a traffic violation, and placed under arrest after failing several standardized field sobriety tests. Sheets was transported to SP Jamestown where he was processed, issued tickets returnable to Kiantone Town Court and released. He is scheduled to appear in Kiantone Town Court later this month.
¯ Jael White, 19, of Camillus, was charged Sunday with unlawful possession of marijuana. White was pulled over at Main and Van Buren streets for traffic violations and, while speaking to White, troopers smelled marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. After searching White and her vehicle, a bag containing 13 grams of marijuana was located. White was issued an appearance ticket and traffic tickets, and is scheduled to appear in Jamestown City Court next month.
¯ SHERMAN — Hollie Petroff, 33, of North East, Pa., was charged March 16 with aggravated driving while intoxicated. While on routine patrol in the village of Sherman, troopers were flagged down by a citizen who claimed to have just witnessed a vehicle strike a parked vehicle at Franklin and West Main streets. At the accident scene, the troopers observed Petroff unconscious and behind the wheel. Petroff regained consciousness and was arrested after failing several standardized field sobriety tests. Petroff was transported to SP Jamestown where she provided a breath sample of .19. Petroff was then processed, issued tickets returnable to Sherman Town Court and released. Petroff is scheduled to appear in Sherman Town Court later in the month. She was uninjured in the accident.
¯ STOW — Tonya Short, 26, of Avon, was charged March 16 with unlawful possession of marijuana. Short was pulled over on Interstate 86 for speeding and while speaking to Short, troopers smelled marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. After a search Short was found to be in possession of a marijuana cigarette. Short was issued an appearance ticket and a speeding ticket and was released. Short is scheduled to appear in North Harmony Town Court later in the month to answer the charge.
