Electrical Fire Causes School Evacuation
TIDIOUTE, Pa. — A Friday morning electrical fire on a utility pole just outside Tidioute Community Charter School resulted in a loss of power at the school, evacuation, and early dismissal.
The fire was put out quickly by responders from Tidioute Volunteer Fire Department, but power could not be immediately restored. There were no injuries related to the fire.
Because there was no power in the building, students were moved to the Tidioute fire hall for the remainder of the day, according to CEO Doug Allen.
Elementary students, supervised by their teachers, moved to the downstairs area of the fire hall, according to Assistant Administrator Ryan Steffan. High school students went upstairs.
Students were in generally good spirits, Steffan said. “Everybody’s safe. That’s the main thing.”
Allen thanked fire department personnel for providing their fire hall on short notice and for allowing the use of their kitchen facility.
Students were served lunch while they waited for the 1 p.m. dismissal.
Penelec and Northwest Electric officials were on the scene before noon.
Allen said they did not expect to be able to restore power before Sunday.
There is no school scheduled for Monday.
School is expected to resume as scheduled on Tuesday.
Allen thanked the various groups involved in making the evacuation, temporary housing, and dismissal of the students run smoothly.
