Spike Strips Used In High-Speed Chase Through Gerry

ELLICOTT -A Randolph man is facing a number of charges after leading police on a car and foot chase Friday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to a wanted person operating a vehicle on North Main Street in the town of Ellicott. Deputies along with the Ellicott Police Department located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The operator of the vehicle, Austin W. Slater, 31, led police on a pursuit through the towns of Ellicott, Ellington, Gerry and Poland. Sheriff’s deputies were able to utilize spike strips on Gerry-Levant Road to disable the vehicle.

After the vehicle entered into a field, Slater fled into a wooded area as a foot pursuit ensued with sheriff’s deputies and New York State Police K9 units. After a large scale search of the area utilizing Starflight, the Sheriff’s Office K9 Drago located Slater hiding in dense brush within the wooded area.

Slater was taken into custody on outstanding warrants. He was additionally charged with third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, reckless driving, failure to comply in a lawful order, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, operating without an interlock device and speeding.
