Reconstruction of the sidewalks on West Third Street in Jamestown is progressing according to schedule and will provide a safer path for people walking in town.
“They have one side complete,” Mark Roetzer, assistant civil engineer, said. “The outside of the project is complete and they excavated the sidewalk blocks on the north side.”
Roetzer said city workers will begin digging for the conduit for the sidewalk lights next week. After that, construction workers will finish laying concrete.
The project has progressed relatively quickly and has not faced major setbacks.
“They started maybe two and a half or three weeks ago,” Roetzer said. “Everything has gone relatively smoothly once they got started. Based on how long the south side took, it will probably be at least another two to three weeks until they have all of the sidewalks and conduit done.”

While the project has progressed according to plan, Roetzer said Jamestown does not currently have the light fixtures for the new sidewalk on Third Street. “The city is waiting for the lights to come in,” he said.
Once the sidewalk is completed, the bases for the light posts are installed and the city receives the light fixtures, Roetzer said the BPU will install the lights and complete the wiring process.
“The sidewalks will probably be done in two to three weeks, and then everything else kind of will follow behind that,” Roetzer said. “In the fall, the Parks Department will be planting new trees.”
The new sidewalks will mark a notable improvement to Third Street, which Roetzer said was in need of reconstruction.
“It’s all nice, level, brand new sidewalk,” he said. “There’s no humps from the old trees that are not there anymore.”
Roetzer expects people will notice a difference once the reconstruction of the sidewalk is completed.
“A lot of people use that to either get to or from downtown, so it’s a much nicer walking area,” Roetzer said. “Once the new lights are in and the trees are in, it will feel a little bit more like a complete street.”
The city has several reconstruction projects scheduled throughout the remainder of this year.
“West Scott is our next one,” Roetzer said.
The Board of Public Utilities is currently working on a water main on the street. Once their work is completed, the DPW will begin reconstruction of the street.
“The DPW will probably be in there in about a month,” Roetzer said. “They’ll be getting new concrete, sidewalks and curbing in the fall.”
