Many Towns, Villages Set With Summer Help

As the summer season begins, so does the time when local towns and villages look to bring back part-time summer helpers.

Most often, the help comes in the form of highway workers, lawn mowers and lifeguards. While finding part-timers sometimes is a struggle, many local towns and villages are set for this year.

“We hire part-time help with the park, and most of the time lifeguards,” Marie Curie, Lakewood town clerk, said. “Of course, for the lifeguards there are certain age and other requirements, and we didn’t get those this year, so we will not open our beach this year. So, we only have one helper this year who helps in the park, and we have them already.”

It is a similar story for Bemus Point, which also closed its beach this year, and has the same part-time employees return every summer.

Busti only has a few hires as well.

“We’ve hired a couple for the highway and parks work,” Darlene Nygren, Busti town clerk, said. “We have no other hires besides that.”

In the town of Carroll, summer workers also include those who help with their summer recreation program that takes place from July 5 to Aug. 12.

“We have enough help this year,” said Susan Rowley, Carroll town clerk. “We have people for the highway, mowers, planters and flag people. We have people that work for our summer recreation program that restore the park as well.”

In Gerry, the town brings the same people back every year.

“We have one part-time mower who does the parks and cemetery,” Gerry Town Supervisor Richard Heath said. “We have three who do the recreation and the park for six weeks starting in July, one leader and two assistants. We also have a part time mower who usually starts in April.”

Perhaps the biggest need is for certified lifeguards. The village of Lakewood advertised for the positions but came up short with those able to perform the job.
