Unsafe Passing Blamed In Morning Route 60 Crash

By Gregory Bacon 2 min read

SINCLAIRVILLE -- Police say reckless driving by an unlicensed driver was to blame for a crash Monday morning that affected many people's commute traveling between Jamestown and Dunkirk.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, around 7 a.m. John H Lemke, 49, of Angola was traveling south on Route 60 between Moon and Luce roads in the town of Charlotte when he allegedly passed another vehicle in a "clearly marked no passing zone." While passing the vehicle, he struck a northbound construction vehicle that was pulling a trailer. The vehicles collided head on.

The collision caused significant damage to both vehicles, the Sheriff's Office said.

The construction vehicle and its four occupants sustained minor injury. The construction vehicle's driver was taken to Brooks Hospital to be checked. The remaining three occupants refused treatment.

Lemke sustained injury and was taken to Brooks Hospital. Deputies said his license was found to have 10 suspensions and revocations in New York state.

Lemke was issued citations for second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation -- alcohol related, switched plates, unsafe passing, failure to keep right, among other traffic violations.

The Sinclairville Fire Department responded to the scene. The southbound lane was closed as volunteers and others cleaned up broken glass and debris from the road.
