LAKEWOOD — There were plenty of superheroes present in the village on Saturday.

More than $6,200 was raised for the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program and about 300 jackets and other winter gear collected for Community Helping Hands during a polar plunge at the Lakewood beach. Organized by bMF (Be More Fitness), the “Frozen Float for Coats” event had a superhero theme.

Brad Barmore of bMF said the goal was to collect new and lightly used jackets, gloves, scarves and beanies that will be donated to the nonprofit Community Helping Hands. “These items will then be distributed to those in need in the Jamestown area,” Barmore said.

Notable names in attendance at Saturday morning’s polar plunge — amid temperatures in the single digits — included Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel, Sheriff James Quattrone, state Sen. George Borrello and Jamie Billquist.
