C. C. Ring Elementary School students ended a long school year with a week of fun while learning about camping.

After a difficult school year having to deal with the pandemic, Ring teachers decided to host a week of activities for their students who made it through the trying year.

“This was such a tricky year, and they did such a great job. We wanted a fun way to leave a good taste,” said second grade teacher Marci Centi. “So that was our purpose.”

“Camp WhatchaKnowNow” was held by various Ring school teachers, including Centi, Ms. Austin, Mrs. Moran, Ms. Genco and Mrs. David. Starting Monday, these teachers held various activities with a camp-out theme within their classrooms.

Centi’s second-graders made boats to see how many items they could bring to their “campsites.”

“We had to get as many supplies on the boats as we could,” Centi said. “So we made tin foil boats to see how much we could get to our campsites.”

The second-graders also earned badges to place on their crafted sashes.

“For all the activities we’re doing, we’re earning badges for our sashes,” Centi said to her second grade class.

They also made “sit-upons,” placemats for the kids to sit on to stay dry and clean when outside.

Throughout the week, the kids also read stories about camping.

On Wednesday, Centi’s class roasted s’mores with solar energy. Boxes with tinfoil on the top were used to capture sunlight and reflect it down onto their chocolate inside the boxes. They also sang campfire songs while their s’mores roasted.

The week will end with a read-aloud of “Oliver and Hope’s Adventure Under the Stars” by Meg Cadts, building tents out of marshmallows and designing t-shirts and bookmarks.
