Clinics Provide Plenty Of Vaccine Options

Several COVID-19 vaccination clinics are taking place this week in Chautauqua County, providing several opportunities for those looking to get the previously coveted shots. The abundance of doses come as 43,083 county residents have completed their vaccination series, according to the state’s online tracker, along with 51,997 who have received at least one shot.

There are clinics scheduled every day this week, including today at the Jamestown Community College campus in Jamestown. The clinic will utilize the Moderna vaccine, and will run from 6:30-11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, Brooks Memorial Hospital, 529 Central Ave., Dunkirk, will host the first of two clinics this week. Those who sign up will receive the Pfizer vaccine. Another clinic, also using Pfizer, will be held Wednesday at Southwestern High School from 3:30-6:30 p.m. The shots are available for all faculty, staff, parents, students over 16, and other community members. Participants do not need to be a Southwestern Central School District staff member, student, parent or resident. But, according to the school district, those interested must pre-register in order to get the vaccine at swcsk12.org.

Doses will be administered Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 7 p.m. at Love Elementary School at 50 E. Eighth St. in Jamestown. Moderna shots will be available.

And on Friday, Brooks will be the site of a clinic from 8 to 10 a.m.

Local pharmacies — including Concord Pharmacy in Fredonia, CVS, Rite Aid, Tops Markets, Walmart and Wegmans — also have doses available to the public.

Anyone who schedules a shot for a clinic taking place this week, or at a pharmacy, will need to be available for a second dose to be administered at a later date.

More than 7 million New York residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

“We will continue to work with our providers and community leaders across the state to ensure the vaccine distribution remains equitable and to address any persisting hesitancy people have about getting the vaccine,” Cuomo said. “Anybody who is 16 years of age and older is eligible, but we’re seeing that some of us are less eager to get it. We all have a duty to do what’s necessary to protect one another, and getting vaccinated is part of that duty so that we can defeat this virus once and for all.”

VACCINE DIALOGUE FOR HISPANIC OUTREACH

Outreach and communication about the importance of getting the COVID vaccine continued last week through a collaboration between the county Health Department, Jamestown Public Schools, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, G-Health Enterprises and local Hispanic pastors. The partnership created videos to reach the Spanish-speaking population. The collaboration is in anticipation of a Moderna vaccination clinic at Love Elementary School.

“Fair and equitable distribution of vaccine is essential to community immunization efforts,” said Christine Schuyler, county public health director. “Vaccination data and meetings with our nonprofit partners emphasized the need for better outreach to the Hispanic community and we are excited to partner on informational sessions and vaccination clinics.”

Chautauqua County members of the WNY Vaccine Equity Taskforce, which includes Amy Rohler (United Way), Todd Tranum (Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce) and Michael Pease (the Chautauqua Center) along with local hospitals and members of the county Health Department, were convinced that the most effective outreach into the Hispanic population would include trusted local voices and medical professionals. The idea for a local “town hall style” panel of Hispanic community members was born.

THREE NEW VIRUS DEATHS

Three new virus-related deaths, along with 40 new COVID cases, were reported Monday by the Chautauqua County Department of Health. The information is from Friday through Sunday.

To date there have been 152 virus-related deaths and 8,978 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the county.

According to health department data, four people between the ages of 40 and 49 have died; six between 50 and 59; 16 between 60 and 69; 31 between 70 and 79; 58 between 80 and 89; and 37 over the age of 90.

Of the new cases noted, 11 came from the Jamestown zip code, four in Fredonia, three each in Silver Creek, Clymer, Kennedy and Sherman; two each in Dunkirk, Bemus Point, Falconer and Westfield; and one each in Ashville, Brocton, Conewango Valley, Gerry and Mayville.
