A single-story commercial building that housed two businesses in the city of Jamestown was destroyed after fire ripped through it New Year’s Eve.

Crews were first alerted around 4:10 p.m. to reports of a propane tank explosion at the 255 Blackstone Ave. property. Upon arrival, Jamestown firefighters discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, home to Transmission Pros and ValPro Sanitary Supply.

A partial collapse was reported minutes after crews first arrived, a battalion chief said at the scene. Everyone managed to get out of the commercial building, though it wasn’t immediately known if there were any injuries.

Off-duty firefighters were called to help, and members of the Jamestown Police Department, Board of Public Utilities and fire investigators also responded.

Close to two dozen vehicles parked across the street from the structure and watched as smoke billowed high into the air. Some commented on social media that the smoke could seen from the interstate near Falconer.

The Jamestown BPU said efforts to battle the blaze would likely result in discolored water to customers on the east side of the city for 12 to 24 hours. “Hydrants pull water through lines quickly, stirring and discoloring water,” the BPU said.
