A man suffered serious injuries after being shot twice, and a Jamestown resident was being held for arraignment, following an argument that broke out Monday afternoon.

The Jamestown Police Department announced the arrest of 27-year-old Jorge Medina-Tirando on charges of first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Officers were called to the 800 block of Prendergast Ave. around 2:30 p.m. for a report of several shots fired.

An investigation found that a man not identified by police was on a porch when a fight broke out between him and Medina-Tirando. The city man then reportedly pulled out a gun a fired several rounds.

The victim was reportedly struck twice and taken by private vehicle to UPMC Chautauqua. He was then transferred to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., and underwent emergency surgery.

The victim’s condition was not known by press time.

Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said the investigation was initially hampered “due to lack of cooperation from multiple eyewitnesses who were present.”

However, police later located Medina-Tirando at a Euclid Avenue residence. As officers approached, Samuelson said the city man jumped out of a third-story apartment window in an attempt to evade capture.

He was taken into custody and transported to Jamestown City Jail; additional charges are pending.

Investigators later located the weapon involved in a wooded area near the scene of the shooting.

“We are very pleased to come to a very quick resolution on this case and credit the officers and investigators with their attention to detail assisting in this quick outcome,” Samuelson said.

Police were assisted by the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and state police K-9 Unit.

Samuelson said it appears at least one bystander tampered with evidence prior to police arriving. “That portion of the investigation is continuing and charges are possible,” he said.

Earlier in the afternoon, Jamestown firefighters, Alstar EMS and officers with the Jamestown Police Department were called to Crossman Street, near Prendergast Avenue, for a report of an injured woman. It was learned that the woman had been accidentally run over by a vehicle around 12:15 p.m.

She was taken by ambulance to UPMC Chautauqua for treatment of multiple injuries. The area was closed to traffic for about an hour.
