MAYVILLE — Volunteers working with the Mayville-Chautauqua Chamber of Commerce are nearing completion of the snow castle for the upcoming 34th annual Presidents Day Weekend Winter Festival.

Lakeside Park will once again be the sight of the celebration, which runs from Friday evening through Sunday.

Due to unseasonably warm winter weather, this marks the first time that crews have been forced to make the castle from a combination of snow and ice rather than simply ice.

The festival of events, activities, crafts, food and contests kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with the lighting of the castle as well as the Queen of Hearts Ice Ball.

Buffalo-based band Black Widow will provide live music, and a full schedule of the weekend’s events can be found on the festival’s Facebook page.

At noon on Saturday, the Family Health Medical Services Polar Plunge event will take place, with proceeds going to benefit the FeedMore WNY Food Bank. Registration for the plunge begins at 10:30 a.m. and forms are also available on Facebook.

The annual Chili Cookoff will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday. More information on that event can be found by calling 366-6200 or emailing jsasso@chautauquachamber.org.

This year festival organizers have partnered with Chautauqua Striders to introduce the Ice Extravaganza 5K, which will begin and end at Lakeside Park with a 10 a.m. start time on Sunday.

Registration for the race can be found at the Striders Facebook Page.
