A man walking with his bicycle was struck and killed early Thursday afternoon in Jamestown.
The 86-year-old man, who was not identified by name by police, was reportedly struck from behind by a van around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Newland and Chautauqua avenues. First responders were first alerted to an unresponsive person lying in the road next to a bike.
The victim suffered severe injuries and was rushed by city firefighters to UPMC Chautauqua where he was pronounced dead.
The area was quickly cordoned off with police tape, and an accident reconstruction team was brought to the scene.
Images of a vehicle believed to be involved in the collision were released by the Jamestown Police Department. Investigators said they had reason to believe the man found in the road had been struck by a white minivan.

The van was stopped on Fairmount Avenue around 3 p.m. by members of the Lakewood-Busti Police Department. The vehicle was found with significant front-end damage, Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said.
The driver of the van, an 82-year-old woman, may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash, Jamestown police said. She was transported to UPMC Chautauqua and later transferred to UPMC Hamot, in Erie, Pa., for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
“The investigation is continuing and charges against the operator will be considered following additional investigation,” JPD said in a news release.
