Ohio Man Pleads Guilty In Fatal Crash

An Ohio man who police say caused a fatal crash involving a Falconer native over the summer pleaded guilty to charges Tuesday.

Mark J. Terrell, 37, entered guilty pleas during a hearing in Clark County Common Pleas Court to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. An additional vehicular assault charge and a tampering with evidence count were dismissed as part of a plea deal, Clark County Prosecutor Dan Driscoll said.

The July 2 crash on Interstate 70 near Springfield, Ohio, killed 20-year-old Matthew Eskeli IV and injured two passengers. According to an accident report, Terrell was driving a BMW when he struck the left side of Eskeli’s Ford Focus around 2:30 a.m., causing the sedan to leave the road, strike an exit sign and light pole, and roll onto its side.

Eskeli was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

An investigation determined that Terrell, a resident of South Charleston, Ohio, was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Driscoll said he was glad to bring some closure to the Eskeli family, some of whom were in court Tuesday.

“Obviously I’m very happy about it,” Driscoll said of the guilty pleas. “Any time you take a trial off the board and get a plea like this is obviously good. The family doesn’t have to go through a trial.”

“This family has been very supportive,” he added.

The Falconer native was a fourth-year mechanical engineering student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was a 2017 graduate of Falconer High School where he was also Valedictorian of his class.

Zach B. Cooper of Brockport and Benjamin C. Cooper of Corning, both passengers in Eskeli’s vehicle, were treated for injuries after the collision. The three were returning to New York after competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb motorcycle competition in Colorado.

Terrell, who had been out on bail, was remanded to jail following Tuesday’s hearing. He is scheduled to be sentenced Monday, Oct. 28, at 8:30 a.m.
