Rough roads weren’t enough to stop the 2019 UPMC Chautauqua Physician of the Year from moving to the Jamestown area.

On Friday, Dr. Patrick Collins was announced as the hospital’s Physician of the Year during a special Doctors’ Day luncheon held at the UPMC Chautauqua’s Foote Avenue facility. Collins came to live in the Jamestown area in 1986, but almost decided not to start practicing in the city. He said on an initial trip to visit the area that he, like many Western New York drivers, was not pleased with the number of potholes in the roads. However, after the visit to the Jamestown area with his wife, Karen, Collins decided to move to the area despite the rough highway conditions.

“I’ve never regretted the decision,” Collins said. “Once I decided to move here, I decided I wasn’t going to leave.”

Collins said he was “honored and humbled” when he found out he was going to be the Physician of the Year.

He said it’s a pleasure to work with so many wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff in the Jamestown area. Collins was one of the founding partners of Jamestown Primary Care in 1996.

Collins earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in biology from Boston College and returned to New York to complete his medical degree at State University of New York at Syracuse and his residency training at State University of New York At Buffalo. He worked in emergency medicine from 1981 to 1986 before entering into private family practice in Jamestown in 1986. Collins is board certified in family medicine. He raised his family in Bemus Point. Collins and his wife, Karen, continue to reside in Bemus Point. They have two grown sons who have served in the U.S. Army.

UPMC Chautauqua Doctors’ Day luncheon is given by the hospital to salute the medical staff that consists of more than 170 physicians representing more than 30 medical and surgical specialties. The Physician of the Year is an honor given annually to one physician in Chautauqua County.

To be nominated for the honor, specific criteria must be met including significant practice experience, compassion and community involvement, and a commitment to a healthier community.

During the luncheon the keynote address was given by Kurt Young, Enrollment Management and Institutional Advancement vice president, who spoke about leadership.
