‘Implied Threat’ Forces Districtwide Lockout

An “implied threat” forced a brief lockout at Jamestown Public Schools and multiple youths were taken into custody Thursday morning.

The lockout was issued after staff at Washington Middle School received a tip around 9 a.m. from a parent regarding a possible threat to Jamestown schools. Staff immediately notified an assigned middle school resource officer, who then contacted Jamestown police.

A lockout for all schools within the district was issued by the superintendent’s office and police. The notice lasted about an hour after all those involved in the possible threat were located and taken into custody.

The nature of the threat was not released Thursday. However, police said due to the ages of those involved, their names could not be released.

Parents were notified of the lockout — which means no one is allowed to enter a school — through the district’s automated notification system. The district later released a statement regarding the incident.

“District buildings were placed on lockout this morning at 9:55 a.m. due to an implied threat to the district. As a precautionary measure, district buildings were secured from outside visitors through the lockout. The Jamestown Police Department has handled the matter and the lockout has been lifted. As the Jamestown Public Schools’ number one priority is the safety of our students and staff, we will always err on the side of caution in any situation.”

Jamestown police said the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of juvenile detectives, the school resource officer and JPD.
