SHERMAN – Sherman Central School District Superintendent Carrie Yohe shared the results of the recent Superintendents’ Days with Board of Education members at a recent meeting.
Yohe and Board President Teresa Guzman presented posters which were created by staff members who indicated their priorities in four categories. Participants were asked what they would like to see in the categories: community, school, staff and students.
Yohe said they officially welcomed everyone aboard “Sherman’s Energy Bus.” Then she went on to say, “I shared with the staff that our vision cannot simply be words written on a piece of paper or posted on a wall . . . it has to become our daily culture – something that our students, staff, families and community can actually feel, hear, and see when they are at Sherman.”
Staff members gathered, by their departments, and each group created posters capturing their ideas.
“The conversations, common themes and energy in the room were amazing,” Yohe said. “More importantly, these were not ideas coming from the administration – they came from our people.”
Staff members listed such things as being heard, staying informed and “having confidence in our school” in the Community category; such words as safe, fun, welcoming and friendly were listed in the School category; in the Staff section, people wrote supported, heard, fun, united and morale; and the words loved, challenged, safety, friendly environment and supported were listed in the Students category.
Yohe told board members that merger discussions come up every day.
“The posters emphasize how the school community must be positive for everyone,” she said. “One negative thing can really drain you. We need one another.”
Yohe said she then challenged the teams to “build their own Sherman bus” to represent their journey through the year.
“Every bus ride isn’t going to be perfect,” she said. “There will be bumps, difficult days, detours, and probably a few potholes along the way, but our culture is what holds us together and helps us remember why we are here and where we are going.”
Yohe updated board members on the results of the recent Regents Exams. In Science, Sherman students scored 84% proficiency; in Math, they scored 81%; in Social Studies, the proficiency was 93% and in ELA, Sherman students scored 100%.
“Our proficiency levels are really good,” she said. “We definitely have reason to celebrate.”
Yohe went on to note that Sherman students in grades six through eight made great gains in ELA and exceeded the average New York state scores in four levels. She also said math is a very strong area.
“Sherman is performing very high compared to the state averages,” she said.
